Domain Name and Registration - How to get one and how to register it.

Your personal or business Web site will have a name. When you contract with an ISP to Host your site, they will assign you a URL, this is your address, and will be your site's "name". A Domain Name is a specific URL, that contains elements that you can recognize, like your business name.com. Domain names require a higher level of service from your ISP, so expect to pay more for them to point to your new "name".

How do I get one? What does it cost?

You will need to purchase your domain name from a Registering Company (see the list below): InterNic, Network Solutions, VeriSign , was the first but was deregulated after 2000, now there are many services selling registration services. Expect to pay as much as $70.00 for 2 years registration, but some are as cheap as $15 per year.

The Name Itself: First think up several possible names. You can now choose an ending from .com, . net, .org, .gov, .biz. & .tv. Go to any suggested Registering Company and do a search for the name you are considering. The will be able to tell you if it is available or if some other similar combination is available. You can also see who owns any domain name by going to the WHOIS section and searching on the name. Most times they will tell you the owners name and when the name is due to expire (you may be able to purchase it). It is a simple search and very educational.

You can fill out the on-line form and pay on-line as well, and they will respond to your e-mail account with the results. You may have your ISP or Web Master arrrange for your domain name as part of their service, sometimes for free. Just make sure they register it in your name and your business name so that it belongs to you and not to your ISP or Web Master.
