The sweetest and most beautiful woman I know left this earth early this morning [Friday 7/23]. After six years of struggling with breast cancer and related health issues--during which time she was almost constantly in pain--she is at last pain-free. Anne & Jim, Steve & Marilyn--and Maia--and I saw her off on her next voyage as we toasted her life. Craig & Erika and the two grandsons are on their way, and will be here in a few hours.

Few people are lucky enough to find their best friend and life's companion at age 17. I was that lucky. After discovering early on that we both liked the same books, we were fortunate together in that we grew together, rather than apart, over the years, and found many other challenges that we enjoyed together--teaching Sunday school, leading trips to Europe, working with the Peace Corps--and many more activities in which we were partners supporting each other.

Many of Patti's former students and their parents, as well as teaching colleagues and close personal friends, have been to see her in the last few days, particularly yesterday, when we had her bed out in the garden with sunshine, flowers and a flowing fountain all around her. Every one of them told Patti how much she had meant to them--as a teacher, mentor, friend. She will be greatly missed in this community, not least by her family, and most of all by me. I am pleased that we had the time to tell her how much she was valued.

Below is a recent picture of Patti with Maia, our newest grandchild. What a blessing to have had our two granddaughters so close, and to be able to see our grandsons frequently! This meant so much to Patti. We once thought she would not live long enough to see grandchildren; her doctor told me a few days ago that she had lived far beyond the time they had expected. Goodbye, my friend. Such a courageous and beautiful person!

As the song says: the time together through all the years will chase away the tears.
